Andalucía declared Spain’s most ‘culture-rich’ region

12/04/2019

It shouldn’t be news to many of the people presently looking to rent a villa in Sotogrande that Andalucía is famed for its cultural diversity. After all, this much is clear from its rich history that has come under the influence of all manner of civilisations, ranging from the native Iberians, the Phoenicians and Carthaginians to the Greeks, Romans and Muslim Moors.

You might not exactly be taken aback, then, to learn that Andalucía has recently been declared to have the greatest cultural clout of any Spanish region.

This judgement was made on the strength of several of the region’s cities. Sevilla, Malaga and Granada were placed at 4th, 5th and 8th respectively in a list ranking the Spanish cities deemed to have the best cultural offerings by holiday lettings portal Holidu.

How was the breakdown achieved?

As reported by The Olive Press, Holidu put the list together by counting the number of sites of cultural interest to be found in each city, before assessing their quality.

While Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia were the three highest-ranked cities, the Andalucían capital of Sevilla also attracted much admiration from Holidu. The site hailed “the beauty of its historic centre, which boasts three buildings declared a World Heritage Site: the Cathedral, the Royal Alcazar and the Archivo de Indias.”

Also spoken of favourably by Holidu was Malaga, which was described as having “a cultural offer to be proud of”, as well as Granada, by virtue of such culturally intriguing sites as the Realejo (Jewish quarter), the city centre (Christian quarter) and the Albaicín (the historical Muslim quarter).

A region that remains a major draw for tourists and investors alike

For all of its undoubted cultural and historical intrigue, Andalucía remains very much one of the places to be in 2019. Indeed, it was also recently reported that the first two months of this year saw Brits visiting Spain in greater numbers and spending more than in the previous year, with the UK once again ranking as Andalucía’s main tourist market.

World-renowned celebrities and public figures continue to pop up in this part of the world, too – such as former US President Barack Obama, who was recently spotted at a trendy Sevilla restaurant after a three-day travel and tourism conference where he was the keynote speaker.
